You are invited to enroll in a complete online poetry writing workshop.
I offer this class as a private instructor, separately from APW, using the enjoyable and challenging writing exercises I've developed during my 10 years of teaching poetry in The Albany Poetry Workshop.
This long-distance learning adventure is for all ages and all levels of experience. All you need to participate is the desire to make better poems and a willingness to study this craft.
In this class, you have the opportunity to:
- Meet poets from around the world
- Make new friends
- Write a new poem every week
- Take a class that fits into your schedule
- Have fun
The eight-week class includes reading and writing assignments, a live discussion board, and weekly online live critiques of the poems you have written.
Here is the basic class procedure:
- At the outset, I email you a syllabus for our overall class procedure.
- Thereafter, at the beginning of each week, I email you a suggested reading list (.txt format), along with a suggested writing exercise.
- You then write a poem based on that exercise, or on anything of your choosing.
- Near the end of the week, you post your poem on a private (password-protected) discussion board for review by the other members of our class.
- On Saturday morning, we meet as a group in a private "chat room" to discuss your weekly writings. Here, we offer and receive constructive comments on how to improve our drafts. (You may save the entire discussion for reference when revising your poem.)
- At the end of our live discussion session, I email you a new writing assignment.
- The following week, you post your new poem on the discussion board, and we begin again.

Class Syllabus and Class Procedure
Class size is limited to ensure that you receive ample feedback on your poems from the other participants and individual attention from me.
The workshop fee is $175.
I am offering one class this fall. It begins:
- mid- to late-September (start date TBD) from 9:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning
The times indicated are Pacific Standard Time. To determine what time this corresponds to your local time, click this useful time conversion chart and type in the words "San Francisco." The chart will reveal the current time in Pacific Standard Time. Then look at your wall clock to determine the difference.
Since we use just the basic computer tools and Internet resources, you may participate in this class using either a PC or Mac. I am familiar with both to assist you in getting started.
The only other tool you will need to participate in this workshop is the Instant Messenger chat program. If you wish to participate, please follow this link to AoL's free download site, install the Instant Messenger program on your computer, and familiarize yourself with it prior to enrolling. If you need help installing or setting it up, I will assist you as best I can.
Finally, if you would like to read evaluations of the class written by several former participants, please feel free to do so.
Please drop me a note if you are interested, and I will respond with further details and answer any of your questions.
Best,
Scott Reid
