IMAGE OF EARTH AND QUILL

Guest Poet James Corbett

Messages

Do words or images
leave spirit traces
in the air?

Do the gates of Ghent
or sunswept peaks of Darien,
resound to joyous echoes?

Does some phantom host
of cavalry wheeling at Balaclava
still look aghast?

Is there — in our time — still
some ghostly scrap of paper
held hopefully aloft?

It's claimed that wireless
waves go on forever —
can still be heard.

How cruel the ether
to eternally repeat
"We are sinking —Titanic"

James Corbett's Questions:

Can someone please suggest an alternative last line to get rid of the split infinitive!
